Welcome to The Tax Shelter!

The Tax Shelter was started in 1971 by Johnny Lill and Johnny Fowler on Baxter St in Athens, GA under the corporate name of National Tax.

Mr. Fowler and Mr. Lill had prepared taxes out of their homes for years and made a decision to form a company together. They concentrated on growing the tax business while Mary Lill, Johnny’s wife, performed bookkeeping, payroll, and business services. Mary focused her attention on the corporate clients and the growth of the accounting business. In 1984, The Tax Shelter expanded for the first time and hired an accounting supervisor and 2 accounting staff.

The firm has always been focused on excellent customer service and being on the cutting edge of technology. The Tax Shelter bought its first PCs in the early 80s and was preparing returns on computers before anyone else in the Athens area.

Electronic filing began in 1986 and again The Tax Shelter was the first firm in Athens to participate. The Tax Shelter experienced dramatic growth in the late 80s due to the popularity of electronic filing and various tax law changes that resulted in more taxpayers receiving refunds.

By 1989 the firm needed more space and moved to the location of 620 Hawthorne Ave in Athens.

During the 2000s we continued to grow and again needed additional space. In 2009 we purchased a lot located next door to our office at that (Hawthorne Avenue) and built the building that currently houses all of our services in the Athens area. As we continue to grow, we will always maintain our focus on Johnny’s founding principles of excellent customer service and cutting edge technology.

Johnny Lill retired from management in 2004 but the firm continues his policies of exceptional customer service and cutting edge technology. The firm has now grown to over 20 employees, 8 accounting and tax professionals, 7 administrative employees, multiple partners, and 4 locations in Georgia. Our main office continues to be located in Athens and we offer a unique product to the area. We have the expertise and knowledge of a traditional CPA firm, can handle the tax volume of a franchise tax operation, and pride ourselves on the best customer service in the industry.

Johnny’s son John has now been operating the Conyers Tax Shelter location since 1991. John grew up in a small city called Bostwick, Georgia. His father, Johnny, owned a tax practice in Athens, Georgia, so most days after high school and college, John joined his parents at the office and learned taxes and accounting.

John graduated from the University of Georgia with a Masters in Accountancy with a specialty in Computer Information Systems in 1985. He joined one of the “Big 8” accounting firms (Arthur Young) and worked there in a variety of departments for almost 7 years. In 1991, he and his Dad opened a second office in Conyers, Georgia. We just celebrated our 25th anniversary in Conyers. We specialize in working with small businesses and preparing income taxes. We also spend a great deal of time training our clients how to use QuickBooks, preparing payroll taxes, sales taxes, and general tax consulting.

John has been married to his lovely wife Lori for almost 30 years and they have 6 boys. In his spare time, John enjoys golf and tennis.

Tell Me More

Dear Friend,

I hope you’ll forgive me for being blunt.

I am John Lill, I’m a C.P.A. and realize that you may not be used to seeing a tax professional talk like this. It’s not my intention to offend (I’m actually being very careful with my words–I am a tax professional, after all).

But I think you’ll agree that the times we’re currently facing require a little straight talk.

Here’s a certain truth: the State and Federal Government would love to have more of your hard-earned money in their accounts. Sure, even though it’s painful, none of us begrudge paying our legal and fair share of taxes. But the problem is that regular taxpayers, like you, are missing out on legal and safe deductions, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars in unclaimed refunds every year!

As a tax professional, it truly breaks my heart, knowing that just a few thousand, or even a few hundred bucks for us “regular guys” out of that vast pool of overcharging could make a world of difference–and they are just sitting there, unclaimed! And with the economy we’re facing now…it’s essential that the “right” professional handles your taxes and other financial matters.

You see, all tax professionals are not the same. From the “discount” chains (notice the quotes) to classic accounting firms, most fly through tax season in a disorganized mess–bleary-eyed and hopped-up on caffeine. It’s no wonder that they treat you like a number and lapse into excuses and tax-talk. (I told you that I would be blunt.)

I’ve put more of my thoughts on these matters in free reports:
